Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a practice area at a golf course revealed that a group of barrows, an Early Bronze Age burial and a possible Neolithic or Bronze Age ritual pit had been recorded in the surrounding area. Other remains found in the vicinity of the site included an Iron Age storage pit, a Romano-British coin, Saxon burials, a medieval church and an 18th century ice house. Cartographic evidence indicated that the proposal site lay within the open expanse of Epsom Downs in the 18th century, and had later occupid several strip fields. It was concluded that a large proportion of the site had escaped development to an extent where any archaeological remains present would have been destroyed, and that it had a moderately high archaeological potential. A watching brief during development was recommended. [AIP] |
