Abstract: |
An assessment was undertaken to provide further information on the archaeological implications of the proposed construction of a terrace of three cottages on land within the property of Antells Farm, Stour Provost. There was no evidence for any prehistoric, Roman or early medieval activity on or adjacent to the site. Other than the church there were no recorded buildings with pre-17th century elements, although it was considered likely that the original nucleus lay west and north of Antells Farm. From the earliest available map evidence (1747) onwards, the proposed development area was shown as undeveloped, open ground; plot or garden and orchard relating to a property only known as Antells Farm in the present century. There were no indications of any structures that would have occupied the street frontage during the post-medieval period. There was also some recent history of agricultural buildings having occupied the site, and indications of terracing, truncations and areas of dumping prior to the layout of the present gardens.
