Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in support of a planning application to develop the large site at Knightsbridge Green. Survey of the historical and archaeological records revealed possible activity frome the Palaeolithic through to the post-medieval period. It seemed likely that any settlement in the later periods was focused on the road junction at Knightsbridge Green. The effect of the development proposals would mean that the Palaeolithic peiod deposits would have been largely removed in those areas with three levels of basement. The proposals would also require the removal of any later archaeological deposits (later Prehistoric, Roman, Saxon, medieval) that may have survived on the surface of the alluvium in those areas not currently occupied by basements. The report therefore recommended the trial excavation of the areas be carried out. [AIP] |
