Abstract:
A desk based assessment and a site inspection were undertaken on an area of proposed opencast mining. The desk based review of archaeological records and published literature showed no archaeological features recorded in the area. Surface marks seen on aerial photographs were confirmed by site inspection as old coal workings, an area of ridge and furrow and a low mound. It was suggested that further investigation be carried out on the mound and that arrangements be made to allow the recording of any early mining features observed during opencast operations.
