Abstract:
The archaeological investigation of two earthworks on land at Gore Farm, Fontmell Magna, comprised the excavation of two trial pits in a large sub-rectangular hollow 350m to the south of the farm. The concentric banks were known to pre-date the existing farm buildings which were constructed around 1870 and the large hollow appeared to pre-date the surrounding post-war plantation. The excavation through the two banks revealed that both were very low, with a shallow ditch present on the inside of the inner bank. The artefact evidence indicated a relatively recent date for the infilling of the ditch and probably therefore, the foundation of the earthwork as a whole. Excavations in the large hollow also suggested a modern date for its construction, with modern artefacts recovered from basal layers in the depositional sequence. It was considered possible that the hollow represented a pre-war chalk quarry pit. [Au]
