Abstract: |
Archaeological observation of fence replacement revealed no evidence for the medieval motte and bailey castle around which the flats were constructed. A layer of possible redeposited natural may have represented the construction of the late medieval moat platform. To the west of the moated area a layer of bricks and mortar was recorded, derived from the demolition of the late 17th/18th century house which stood on the moat platform until the 1960s. Any other archaeology in the area to the south and west of the motte and moat was likely to have been destroyed by landscaping associated with the creation of the flats in the early 1960s. To the east of the moated platform an area of cobbled surface was recorded which may have been associated with the farm that occupied this area prior to the erection of the flats. [Au(abr)] |
