Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment was undertaken of the site in advance of proposed mineral extraction. This consisted of a desk-based assessment, an aerial photographic survey and the visual inspection of the site. The development area was an enclosed landscape containing ridge and furrow. There was no physical evidence of early mining activity although documentary sources referred to mining in the general area from the 14th century. Immediately adjacent to the development area there was at least one old shaft and it was anticipated that mining activity would be encountered underground. The report recommended that, should any mining features be observed during opencast operations, these should be recorded and that an archaeological should be present during the stripping of topsoil from across the site.
