Abstract: |
A walkover survey was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development. The results of a desk-based assessment undertaken previously for an adjacent site were also used to gauge the archaeological potential of the proposal site. Prehistoric and Anglo-Saxon artefacts had been recorded in the vicinity, and an aerial photograph taken in 1989 had revealed a series of subdivisions within the site. These appeared to have represented a string of small, roughly rectangular divisions. Roman and medieval pottery production sites had lain to the east of the site. During the walkover survey, a slight circular depression and a very slight linear hollow running parallel to the western site boundary were noted. The latter was interpreted as a ditch, likely to have related to the boundary. No artefacts of archaeological interest were found. It was suggested that trial trenching should be undertaken, or that a watching brief should be maintained during groundworks associated with the proposed development. [AIP] |
