Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment identified that the site, located within the core of the planned medieval town of Reigate, was regarded as of high archaeological potential. The backlands of the rectangular plots that ran back from the High Street were used for a variety of purposed, ranging from minor industry to rubbish disposal, as shown by earlier excavations. One investigation revealed that 13th century levels were sealed by upcast from digging of the castle ditch, suggesting that this side of the High St may not have then been built up. The area had clearly been terraced but to varying degrees, probably associated with the 18th century and later structure. Construction and demolition works in the post-medieval period may have disturbed medieval levels but, again, the extent of this was quite uncertain. [Au(adp)] |
