Abstract: |
Four boreholes were excavated prior to the potential redevelopment of the site. The watching brief was undertaken because the site lay on the line of the Hadrian's Wall Corridor, which was a World Heritage Site. The purpose of the watching brief was, firstly, to ensure that the fabric of the Wall was not disturbed and, secondly, to see if the boreholes could provide any information on the location and preservation of the Wall or its associated features. The natural subsoil was encountered at a significantly greater depth in the borehole to the south of the building than those in its rear yard. One possible explanation, which could not be excluded without further investigation, was that the borehole to the south of the fire station had encountered the Wall Ditch. [Au(abr)] |
