Abstract: |
The watching brief recorded important evidence for the development of the area during the Roman and medieval periods. The site lay just outside the core of the Roman and medieval town of Staines. Of particular interest was the identification of human burials within the site. The discovery of a hearth and coins certainly suggested fairly intensive occupation use. 4th century Roman material had been identified on the site and this seemed to be the date of most, if not all, of the Roman pits. There then seemed to be a gap in occupation until the 11th or 12th century. Two parallel ditches of that date seemed to be plot boundaries, and there was also a large 12th-century pit. There was then evidence in the form of pits and a ditch for settlement until the 13th and 14th centuries. [Au(adp)] |
