Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site as part of a project by Northumbrian Water Limited to construct a septic tank and an area of land drainage across the site. The comprehensive history of the village and environs of Picktree from its earliest form remained elusive. Nothing detailed was known about the extent of the village before the middle of the 19th century. Possible traces of earlier occupation could have survived within the development area. It was also possible that deposits associated with a nearby suggested Roman fortification and prehistoric landscape features might be revealed. The report recommended that, as the majority of the work (which had already been completed) had been monitored by an archaeologist and no features of archaeological interest were revealed, no further action would be necessary unless further development was to be undertaken.
