Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation comprising six trial trenches was carried out prior to the diversion of a watercourse to provide flood protection. The site was thought on historical grounds to be on the site of a Saxon royal manor, a geophysical survey identified a number of anomalies. These anomalies were found to be non-archaeological in origin, but three undated ditches, an undated pit and a Saxo-Norman pit were discovered. No evidence was found to suggest a Saxon royal centre, and it suggested that the documentary sources referred instead to a detached portion of royal land held from a royal estate centre situated outside of the Weald.
