Abstract:
Four trial trenches were excavated prior to the submission of an application for planning consent. The application proposed the demolition of the existing accommodation block and the construction of a number of new accommodation buildings. As excavation proceeded it was noted that one of the trenches and consequently part of the proposed development lay in the base of a disused quarry and had been subject to geotechnical investigation in the recent past. On securing copies of the logs for that work it was agreed that there was no need to further evaluate that area at this stage. The remaining three trenches revealed little predating the construction of the main house in the early 1920s. Trench 2 exposed a length of brick foundation thought to represent an out building contemporary with the late 19th century Fairview, whilst Trench 3 revealed linear features thought to have been produced by a three wheeled traction engine during the operation of the 'George Road Quarries' or the construction and landscaping of the current house and gardens. The natural base in all trenches was river terrace gravels known as the 'Kingston Leaf'. This was disturbed in places by the action of tree roots. [Au(abr)]
