Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the construction of a fire exit with an associated staircase within the south-west corner of the southern quadrangle of Chicksands priory. This Priory was founded around 1150AD and by tradition the buildings of this order formed two quadrangles which, in this case, were thought to have been built around the Church of Saint Mary which existed prior to AD 1150. The buildings of the southern quadrangle contained the only standing remains of the original priory. The excavation located the missing western cloister. A well/pit was revealed and, on the basis of the re-used material incorporated into it, was thought to postdate the cloister and was probaly related to one of the many phases of alterations that occurred after the priory was dissolved in 1538. This feature was therefore not considered to be a significant part of the Priory buildings. [Au(adp)] |
