Abstract:
Research was carried out into the archaeological and historical background of a proposed redevelopment site. Previous assessment and evaluation work had been carried out in connection with an earlier planning application. The research indicated that significant structural remains dating from the Roman, medieval and post-medieval periods had been recorded during successive redevelopments of various parts of the site, most notably in 1872, 1928 and 1960. An important phase of the site's history had occurred in the medieval period, at which time the area of the site had lain within the precinct of a priory. Remains uncovered during earlier works had included a fragment of Roman terrace wall, a stream or water channel which had run through a culvert in that wall, and some very significant stretches of a number of walls associated with the medieval priory buildings. The little evidence which had survived relating to the levels at which the bases of these remains had been discovered suggested that they had lain at significantly hgher levels than those at which the foundation slabs of the present buildings lay. The current re-development proposals aimed mostly to re-use existing foundation slabs on the eastern side of the site as an integral part of the new foundation scheme. In the central area of the site on the south side, the existing slab was to be removed, and a new slab laid at the same level as previously. The proposals would therefore only require penetration of the sub-slab deposits in a few discrete areas. Previous core sampling had demonstrated that no material of archaeological signficance had survived immediately beneath the foundation slabs at locations threatened by the earlier scheme. It was recommended that trial pits should be excavated in order to evaluate some locations where reduction below existing formation levels had been proposed. [Au(adp)]
