Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed route of a bypass revealed that twelve sites of archaeological significance within the survey area had been identified from aerial photographs. These included medieval ridge and furrow, and features which indicated possible ditched enclosures, a possible ring ditch, a former field boundary and a grouping of possible pits or post holes. In areas adjacent to the route, further ridge and furrow and additional features had been recorded. In the surrounding area, evidence of human activity dating from all periods from the Palaeolithic onwards was represented. Excavated sites included barrow ditches, Iron Age settlements and a field system dating from the 2nd century AD. Recommendations were made for the archaeological evaluation and recording of the proposed bypass route. [AIP] |
