Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of a cable trench in two areas along its route, where it passed close to a Cluniac abbey and an Iron Age hillfort. The Battle of Northampton was fought in the vicinity of the abbey in 1460. Where the trench passed through a farmyard attached to the abbey, several features were recorded. These included four drains, the vestige of a possible wall built of ironstone blocks, a ditch, a metalled surface and three furrows. No archaeological features or artefacts were observed in the vicinity of the hillfort, although possible evidence for former quarrying activity was noted. [AIP] |
