Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development identified that a number of findspots of prehistoric material had been recorded a short distance to the north. Artefacts found had included Mesolithic flints, and implements of Neolithic and Bronze Age date. Evidence of later occupation was provided by the presence of a Romano-British cemetery. Documentary evidence indicated that Haslemere had occupied its present location since the early 13th century, when market rights had been granted. Much of the proposal area would have been situated within the backlands of the medieval town. Early cartographic evidence revealed that the present High Street, along with the area of the Georgian Hotel, had been developed by the late 18th century. It was recommended that trial trenching should be undertaken, and that a watching brief should be carried out during the proposed renovation of the buildings fronting the street. [AIP]
