Abstract: |
The area formed part of one of a number of detached 'Ends' or small hamlets shown on 19th century maps which surrounded the village of Hanslope. The origin and development of these subsidiary settlements was poorly understood. The present work suggested that part of the medieval open field was taken out of cultivation and developed to form a linear sequence of closes during the later 13th or 14thh century. Excavation has shown that at least some of these plots contained domestic buildings and yards, though the remains were poorly presented. The settlement appeared to have been reorganised, perhaps with a decline in the number of buildings sometime in the 17th century, a situation shown on the estate map of 1818. [Au(abr)] |
