Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of the proposed residential redevelopment of the site, converting 48 Front Street into flats and inserting a road to allow vehicular access from Pier Road. Three trenches were investigated, which revealed evidence relating to the medieval settlement of Tynemouth, Victorian development of the site, and the subsequent use of the land for horticultural purposes. Trench 1 contained several layers of Victorian construction debris, a pit of the same era and building debris. Trench 2 contained buried medieval and post-medieval soils, overlain by imported material of 19th century date and garden deposits. Trench 3 exposed existing garden deposits, imported material of 19th century date, the stone foundations of what may have been a 19th century outbuilding, part of a substantial 19th century rubbish pit, and underlying buried post-medieval and medieval soil horizons.
