Abstract: |
An excavation was carried out on land which formed part of a larger area of gravel extraction. Cropmarks had previously been recorded within the site, and an evaluation had confirmed the presence of two sub-rectangular ditched enclosures with traces of linear features and a pit alignment within the western field. The possible enclosure identified in the eastern part of the site had not been found within the evaluation trenches, and was probably a geological feature. The excavation, which covered an area of c. 2ha, revealed a double-ditched rectangular barrow with two crouched inhumations, a small square enclosure, and part of the pit alignment with associated boundary ditches. Fidns were sparse throughout, but those recovered, particularly from the square enclosure, suggested a Middle Iron Age date for the excavated features. [Au(adp)] |
