Abstract: |
The site lay outside of the historic core of Oxford and, according to cartographic evidence, had seen very little activity from early post-medieval times until its most recent history. Rocque's map of 1761, the earliest available, showed no detail for the site and it was presumably used as meadow until the start of the 20th century, when it was absorbed into the expanding railway complex. The SMR revealed no entries for the site itself, the closest entry being a Roman coin found from land immediately north-west of the site. There was the possibility of the survival of remains associated with the railway. The OS map of 1921 showed a railway turntable on the site. It was possible that a rectangular enclosure on the map of 1899 may have been an early stage of development for the turntable. [Au(adp)] |
