Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out in advance of the proposed development of the site for housing. This involved a programme of 26 trenches excavated on land used for 'permanent' caravan sites, which had formerly been pasture. In the central part of the site an extensive buried soil was encountered sealed by hillwash up to 1m thick. The former deposit in turn sealed extremely well defined features apparently cut into an out-crop of fragmented yellow Dolomitic Conglomerate. These features were treated as archaeologically significant until it was determined that they probably represented solution hollows. No artefacts were recovered from these trenches, though two flint flakes of likely Neolithic or Bronze Age date were recovered unstratified from trenches to the west of this area. [Au(abr)] |
