Abstract: |
Bury Farm was thought to be a medieval homestead moated site, although much of the moat had been backfilled. Three listed buildings and a renovated farmhouse with 17th century origins, stood on the moat's island. The earliest deposit found by the evaluation was a Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age post pit, possibly indicating the site of a very early building. Residual, prehistoric worked flints found in a number of test pits over the site, signified that prehistoric people were bringing flint cores to the site, and roughing them out. The evidence, particularly in conjunction with post pit 012, and other nearby prehistoric sites, suggested that the area was favoured for settlement and exploitation from the Bronze Age until at least the Early Iron Age. 12th to 17th century land division was represented by two parallel linear ditches and a possible track on the same orientation as the moat. 12th to 17th century arable agriculture was possibly represented by layer 010 in test pit 7, and layer 064 in test pit 3, although this interpretation of the deposits was by no means certain. Three 12th to 17th century buildings may have been represented by a chalk floor and wall in test pit 1, a layer of rubble in test pit 1, and a possible beam slot and possible clay floor in test pit 7. Two of the possible buildings may have been associated with the existing barns (A and D). Structural evidence found in test pit 3, in the form of old floors and stake holes related to earlier phases, division and use of barn A. [Au(abr)] |
