Abstract: |
The assessment site lay within the historic core of the 17th century spa town. Waterloo Road and the development of the land to the west, however, was a late 19th century addition associated with the creation of the railway line, and not the early spa phase of the town. The town had developed from an earlier village. St. Martin's was in existence from at least the 11th century and may, in its earliest period, have been the focus for a small settlement in the immediate vicinity. In the 12th or 13th century a more rectangular two-row village was established along the present High Street. Evidence indicated that there was a high probability that any archaeological deposits would already have been removed during earlier development activities on the site. [Au(adp)] |
