Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation of the proposed housing site included the mechanical excavation of a trench across the medieval town ditch, which used to run along the western edge of the property. The section was not complete because the ditch extended under St Andrews Street beyond the property. The bottom of the ditch was below the reach of the excavator, but was at least 3.8m deep. The trench also exposed the remains of the town bank, a buried topsoil sealed by the bank, and fragmentary remains of the medieval town wall, which had been inserted into the bank. The bottom of the town wall was bonded into another flint wall from a later building. This probably fronted directly onto St. Andrews Street, after the ditch had been infilled during the 16th century, and when the street was much wider. [Au] |
