Abstract: |
Two trial trenches were excavated in advance of the proposed construction of a public house. A number of archaeological features were noted in both trenches, directly beneath the hardcore for the car park on the site. Trench 1 yielded a post-medieval wall and a section of foundation for a wall, directly overlying and cutting into natural deposits. Trench 2 yielded similar stone-work, comprising sizeable blocks of sandstone rubble, also likely to have been a wall foundation. Medieval ceramics (mid 13th-14th century) were found in association with both walls. The evaluation demonstrated limited survival of medieval remains, which, coupled with the results of the earlier assessment, demonstrated that there was a potential for archaeology within the study area.
