Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of a decision upon planning permission to redevelop the site. Northchurch had produced evidence for scattered occupation during the prehistoric and Roman periods. Saxon occupation of the immediate area was suggested by fabric of late Saxon date in the parish church. The town had since expanded and despite being a parish in its own right, it now fell under the jurisdiction of the Berkhamsted parish. The site lay opposite St Mary's Church, along the main artery of the village (the former line of Roman Akeman Street). Known archaeological finds were sparse for this side of the High Street, but the development area was located near to a prehistoric territorial boundary and Roman villa. The existing building on the site had undergone considerable change since the early 19th century. This was illustrated on historic cartographic sources, though development appeared to have been restricted to the High Street frontage, with the garden areas to the rear remaining relatively untouched.
