Abstract: |
During the watching brief, a large rectangular feature measuring 55.15m east-west by 34.58m north-south was identified. Map regression evidence suggests that this was the robber cut and demolition material from Marlborough House (built 1733), which burnt down and was demolished in 1785. This building was contemporary with the tunnel which linked it to servant's quarters located somewhere to the northeast of the area of development. Four boxed or arched brick culverts were also recorded. These were constructed using the same brick types present in both the tunnel and the demolition material and were likely part of the water and waste management system for Marlborough House and gardens.
