Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a nursing home in Godalming identified that several prehistoric artefacts had been found within the town, including Mesolithic worked flints, two Bronze Age axes, Bronze Age and Early Iron Age pottery and five Iron Age coins. The exact locations of some of the findspots were unknown. Little evidence of Roman activity had been recorded in the area. Only one artefact of this date, a coin, had been found, although evidence of a possible Roman/Saxon or medieval waterfront had been discovered to the north-east of the site. Godalming had first been referred to in c. 880, in the will of King Alfred. It had developed as a market centre after receiving a grant of a market and annual fair in 1330. Much evidence of medieval occupation had been excavated in the area, often in the form of cess pits and rubbish pits in the gardens or backyards of what would have been street front properties. It was concluded that the site had an uncertain potential for archaeological remains of prehistoric and Saxon date, a low potential for Roman remains and a moderate potential for medieval remains. The potential for post-medieval evidence was high, as an 18th century map indicated that a building had lain on or near the site, and the foundations of buildings shown on early 19th century maps could have survived.
