Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out prior to an application for planning permission, on an area outside the Scheduled part of Mettingham Castle. The proposed development was assumed to fall partially within the area of the Scheduled Ancient Monument, and the results of the first stage of investigation were intended to allow an informed decision as to what mitigation measures were to be taken regarding the archaeology within the Scheduled area, if the development was to go ahead. Test pitting indicated that the spoil from the construction of the moat had been used to raise the level of the internal area; however no evidence for a buried soil was recorded. Although some artefacts were recovered, which corresponded to periods of known activity, there were not enough to indicate occupation in the immediate vicinity. [Au] |
