Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to proposed developments. It was clear from the SMR that the archaeological potential was good to high. No archaeological material had been found specifically from the site, probably due to a lack of archaeological survey during earlier development. Evidence relating to earlier activity from the surrounding area was extensive, and although the SMR showed a bias towards the Palaeolithic, many other periods of occupation and activity were represented. The early cartographic evidence suggested that the development area had not undergone any serious degree of ground disturbance and that until the mid-20th century, the primary land use was agricultural. The maps examined also indicated that the land lay beyond the extent of the early town of Farnham or village of Wrecclesham, and was hence unlikely to have been affected by the urban growth of either of the centres.
