Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of the proposed construction of a new indoor swimming pool and associated accommodation. The evaluation revealed that the area had been extensively built up by dumping in the late post-medieval and modern times. The soil layer buried by this activity was 19th century or later in date and overlay a single feature, a gully of possible prehistoric date. This cut into the top of a thick layer of mid red sandy silt which appeared to be the wind blown subsoil deposits that would be expected to form a layer over the top of the gravel or Oxford Clay in this region.
