Abstract: |
The site had the potential to reveal evidence of structures responsible for the management of water within the castle moat (the site was adjacent to the Scheduled Monument of Oxford Castle) and for houses fronting Paradise Street. A previous evaluation had revealed water management features in the form of two culverts. A trench located within 2 metres of the site boundary did not reveal any complex stratigraphy representing houses. This could have indicated that the original street frontage lay further to the west, beneath the modern road. Alternatively, only one of the early historic maps (1675) showed structures along the whole of the street frontage and it was possible that the trench was located in a gap between the structures.
