Abstract: |
The watching brief demonstrated that a large part of the development area was situated upon made-up ground comprised of demolition material derived from medieval/post-medieval structures that presumably once stood in the vicinity. Concealed and undisturbed beneath these layers, lay an old ground surface. Further machine excavation through the buried topsoil revealed a large, waterlogged rock-cut feature, from which medieval artefacts were recovered. This was believed to have been a medieval water feature of anthropogenic origin - either a moat or a pond. Artefacts recovered from above the water feature dated from the high to late medieval periods. [Au] |
