Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment and building recording was carried out in advance of a proposed development. The site lay outside the known area of Roman and medieval settlement in Gateshead. However, the development site itself lay within the Medieval Bishop's Park and the possibility that it contained the remains of the Bishop's retreat, or park residence should not be dismissed as it had not yet been found elsewhere. In addition the importance of this area of Gateshead in terms of industrial archaeology should not be underestimated. Hawk's Iron Works was established in the area in 1747, and the building still existed on the site and dated to the later end of their Empire. Hawks was important for the social and economic status of the area with a paternalistic policy towards employees. Due to the fact that sub-surface industrial remains were likely, as well as a chance of a medieval Bishop's Residence, it was recommended that trial trenching be carried out on the site. [Au(adp)] |
