Abstract:
Five evaluation trenches were excavated in advance of a proposed scheme of work for the alteration of the stables and barn and the construction of a new building. The predicted archaeological potential of the site was not confirmed by this investigation. A depth of between 0.1m and 0.6m of deposits was encountered. This material dated from the 18th/19th century and the modern period and was found immediately above in situ natural deposits. The absence of earlier deposits within the boundary of the existing building complex suggested that, when these buildings were constructed in the 18th century, the area may have been landscaped causing the truncation of earlier deposits. Supporting this interpretation was the survival of a plough soil outside the building complex. This soil indicated that the land had been used for agriculture from the medieval period until the 19th century. [Au(adp)]
