Abstract:
The site lay just to the north of Aldgate, which, during the Roman period was one of the gates through the City Wall, recorded some 40 metres to the south-west of St Botolph's House. Apart from some slight evidence of structural activity immediately to the south of St Botolph's Church, the only Roman activity recorded in the vicinity of the site was of brickearth and gravel quarrying. Cartographic evidence showed that there were buildings on the site from at least the 16th century, although no information had been found regarding the extent of cellars or basementing prior to the existing buildings. Evidence from a number of sites in the vicinity indicated tha only the bottoms of very deep cut features would have been likely to survive beneath the existing basement slab, and therefore be threatened by the ground reduction for the additional level of basement. Elsewhere, the ground disturbance would be confined to discrete areas. It was therefore concluded that evaluation of the discrete areas to be affected by ground reduction would be necessary to enable an appropriate strategy to be drawn up by which this material could be excavated and recorded. The report also recommended that any excavation necessary for the removal of obstructions at pile locations should also be archaeologically monitored. [Au(adp)]
