Abstract:
A desk-based assessment of the archaeological implications for the management of the Recreation Ground and the Bleachfield Street Allotments, identified the allotment site as the centre of the Roman extramural settlement and likely to contain extensive occupation deposits. It was possible that the area contained the best surviving deposits associated with the putative first century fort and vicas, as well as the best preserved late Roman occupation. The southern end of the site also contained parts of the Roman road to Stratford with occupation known on both sides. A large stone building in this area had been identified as a possible mansio. It did not appear that the medieval settlement along Bleachfield Street extended as far as the allotments. The Recreation Ground was unlikely to contain Roman or medieval settlement remains but may have covered part of a Roman cemetery. Its location adjacent to the river could also indicate that Roman waterlogged deposits may have survived in the area. [Au(adp)]
