Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that there was little or no evidence to suggest that the area had been settled prior to the Saxon period. The site lay in the south-east corner of the Saxon and later town of Guildford, and could have been occupied in early times by the backlands of plots fronting the High Street, and possibly by access ways to the nearby town defences. It was noted that all near surface archaeological deposits at the site would have been destroyed by the construction of a 1960s car park. It was concluded that the only evidence which could potentially survive would be the basal levels of deep pits and wells, and the lower levels of the town ditch if this had crossed the site. A watching brief during development, coupled with an area excavation if warranted, was recommended. [Au(adp)] |
