Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was maintained during drainage and conversion works at the former church of St.Swithin, Patney, in December 1996. A drainage ditch was excavated across the churchyard to the north of the building and partially revealed 13th and 14th century burials, they were not examined in detail or lifted. Fragmentary and disarticulated bone was encountered at higher levels, and was reinterred on site. No other archaeological deposits or finds were encountered. Works involving the removal of a window and creation of a wider opening in the north wall of the nave was also observed and recorded. No evidence for pre-12th century construction was forthcoming, but, in conjunction with documentary evidence, the observations went some way towards clarifying the extent and sequence of late-19th century rebuilding and renovation in this part of the church.
