Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a swimming pool identified that only two sites of archaeological interest had been recorded within a 1km radius. These comprised a mill, built in the later half of the 19th century, and a site where coffins containing human remains had been found. Cartographic and documentary sources relating to Gosterwood Manor itself indicated that the house dated back to the 16th century, although the site may have been occupied by a house from an earlier period, and that it may originally have been a moated site. It was recommended that the archaeological potential of the proposal area should be investigated by trial trenching. [AIP] |
