Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of two sites in advance of residential redevelopment. The riverside location of the assessment site may have been favourable to prehistoric groups, although there was little indication of intensive prehistoric activity in the vicinity. The parish of Kimbolton itself and surrounding areas had a dearth of evidence dating between the Mesolithic to late Roman periods. It was only in Saxon times that burial and settlement sites had been identified at the confluence of the Kym with the Ouse. Kimbolton was an important medieval market town that originally grew up alongside the south bank of the river Kym outside the gates of the castle. Early maps indicated some important sites in the vicinity of the assessment area, including the moated site of the parsonage and the 13th century parish church of St Andrew. The assessment area itself had remained open land until relatively recently, and was peripheral to the focus of medieval and post-medieval settlement. Thus there was little potential for finding features relating to these periods. [Au(adp)]
