Abstract:		 A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of a foundation trench, at a site which lay within medieval Tewkesbury. A Benedictine priory had been founded in the area in c. 715; this had become an abbey in 1102. The abbey church and the boundary of the monastic precinct lay close to the site. No. 87 Church Street itself was a Grade II Listed Building with a 19th century front and 16th century rear. During the watching brief, fragments of late medieval/early post-medieval pottery were found, immediately beneath the remains of a drystone wall. A break in the wall was interpreted as a possible post-medieval pit. It was concluded that the wall was probably contemporary with the 16th century house, and that the stone used to build it had probably been taken from the nearby abbey buildings following the Dissolution.
