Abstract: |
An archaeological observation of ground investigations to assist with proposals for a Finham Brook Alluviation Scheme in Kenilworth Castle Mere was undertaken adjacent to the Tiltyard Dam in order to fulfil a condition upon the Scheduled Monument Consent. The dam, which lay in the Scheduled Area of Kenilworth Castle, was a complex and important medieval structure dating back to the 12th century. The excavation of four test pits and boreholes in the Mere recorded a variety of alluvial deposits, including, to the south of the Finham Brook, undated waterlogged depposits. There was thus considerable potential for important medieval waterlogged remains to survive adjacent to the south-east end of the dam. [Au(adp)] |
