Abstract: |
In 1579 thesite was in use as pasture, although the field name Wheate Stubbes suggested that it had formerly been in arable use. By 1724 this had been converted to garden, with a map of 1759 showing it apparently in use as orchard. Horticultural use of the land seemed to have continued until the plot was developed in the mid-1830s as the site for Ashely Villa. Most of the garden appeared to have been given over to use as a builder's yard until well into the present century. The house was demolished at the end of the 1950s. Most recently the site had been landscaped to accompany Phase 1 of the development next door. [Au(abr)] |
