Abstract:
The site forms a significant fragment of the largely unexplored archaeological resource of the medieval market town and religious settlement at Pershore. It encompasses a substantial area, including parts of at least four medieval burgage plots. The overall depth of surviving archaeological deposits across the site proved to exceed 1.2m in all the examined areas. Post-medieval deposits lay directly beneath current ground surfacing and in two trenches overlaid and truncated medieval deposits dating from the 13th-14th century. In the main trench excavated, which was located within the back plot area of properties fronting onto the High Street, remains of a substantial medieval oven and stoking chamber survived at a depth of only 0.25m below current ground level. This structure overlaid earlier medieval deposits representing fills of domestic rubbish pits. Similarly dated deposits were also present in a second trench, where a ditch or gully suggested that the property boundary dividing the plots until recently dated to the medieval period. The site produced environmental material and a diversity of artefactual evidence, confirming its high archaeological potential.[AIP]
