Abstract: |
In January 1993 four small trenches were excavated on the north east side of Warwick Castle Mound to assess the archaeological impact of proposals to remodel and extend the existing pathway up this side of the mound. The mound is the earliest surviving part of the Castle, being the motte of the motte and bailey castle on which work began in 1086. Cartographic evidence indicates that the path was constructed some time between 1851 and 1886. The excavations revealed that the layers below the topsoil were all fairly clean in character and probably represented medieval mound construction material. Since these layers were not penetrated to any depth, no evidence concerning the structural details of the mound was obtained. Only one of them (405) contained pottery (a single ?13th century sherd), but 405 and 103 contained roof tile, which suggests that these layers were later additions to the mound rather than original Norman construction. Generally, the quantity of 13th century material in the topsoil would seem to indicate that there was activity of that date in the vicinity.[AIP] |
