Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to a condition upon planning consent granted for the refurbishment and extension of an existing office complex. On sites in this area, there was the potential for up to four metres of archaeological stratigraphy to have survived where ground disturbance had been limited. Companies house, the building which now occupied the site, however, was known to have been basemented to a depth of c.5m, apart from the north-east corner which was being used as a car park. Further damage would have been caused by foundations and piling. Any archaeological stratigraphy in the north-east corner of the site was likely to be removed as a result of the proposed development. The earliest structural remains that may have been on the site may date to the 15th or 17th centuries, although the site was not fully developed until the late 18th century, initially as housing which was replaced by warehouses. Research had indicated that the site lay on the northern edge of Moorfields marsh and it was likely that much of it was open throughout the medieval period until the 18th century. Archaeological features from this period may have included drainage ditches and evidence of industrial processes. Roman remains could be present on the site as Roman quarry pits and burials were known from excavations in the vicinity. The Roman road to the north of the site probably followed the line of an Iron Age trackway. Palaeolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age artefacts had also been found in the area. It was proposed that an archaeological evaluation be combined with the forthcoming site investigation works to determine the character and extent of any surviving archaeological features with particular regard to the area of single basement in the north-east corner of the site.
